Solid phase extraction, or SPE, is used to isolate pollutants in water and pesticides in food, isolate drugs in blood and tissue samples, and separate proteins from a mixture, among other applications. The type of extraction that will be needed and the type of analytes to be separated are important determinants in which solid phase extraction system you use. Types of SPE methods, such as automated SPE, ion exchange solid phase extraction, and normal and reversed phase SPE, are outlined.
