Antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” are becoming more common with the current use of antibiotics. Much of that antibiotic use is in livestock production, and the meat from these antibiotic-treated animals can introduce antibiotic-resistant bacteria to the people who eat it. Colonizing opportunistic pathogens can become antibiotic resistant in livestock and take a food-borne path. Antibiotic-resistant strains kill tens of thousands of people in the US each year. Learn about the relationship between antibiotic use in livestock and antibiotic-resistant extra-intestinal E. coli infections.
